"Challenger II" back at Bonneville

It took 46 years, but the Challenger II has finally returned to the Bonneville Salt Flats as Danny Thompson moved a step closer to finishing the quest his late father, Mickey Thompson started in 1968 in seeking the wheel-driven land speed record with the car.

“My crew and I are here for the USFRA Test and Tune. This will be our first opportunity to run the streamliner on the salt, and will provide us with the data we need for the upcoming SCTA and FIA events,” Thompson reported.

Although there will be no attempted record runs during the Test and Tune sessions, the first runs will provide information to the Challenger II team in preparation for their LSR assault.

“Tomorrow will be the first day that we get to run, so we’ll have a chance to learn whether the last four years of work have been leading us in the right direction,” added Thompson. “I can’t wait!”

Thompson and his team will be posting blog entries, photos, and audio from the Test and Tune each evening at www.thompsonlsr.com/news
