Wayne Taylor Racing’s Corvette DP missed out on the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship’s top time at Road America yesterday by around one-tenth of a second but went fastest by a similar margin this morning. In second practice for tomorrow’s Continental Tire Road Race Showcase, Jordan Taylor lapped the 4.048-mile course in 1min57.118sec. This put him narrowly ahead of the similar car of Action Express Racing, driven by Christian Fittipaldi, but precisely 0.75sec ahead of Spirit of Daytona Racing’s Corvette.
Memo Rojas drove the Riley-Ford Ecoboost of Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates to fourth, almost a full second away from top spot, but still enough to eclipse the LMP cars of ESM Racing (today led by the No. 1 car driven by Scott Sharp) and the Morgan-Nissan of Olivier Pla. However the OAK Racing machine had an off at Canada Corner with Gustavo Yacaman at the wheel, which brought the session to a halt a couple minutes early.
But perhaps the big news of the session – although it’s becoming increasingly less remarkable – was the continued sparkling form shown by IndyCar rookie Jack Hawksworth. In this morning’s session, he sent RSR’s No. 08 ORECA (ABOVE) to the top of the time sheets by 0.638sec, ducking under the 2-minute barrier as he did so. Interestingly, though, Luis Diaz, second quickest for 8Star Motorsport, was 1.2sec ahead of his nearest pursuer, Colin Braun in the CORE autosport entry.
The No. 93 Dodge SRT Viper GTS-R of Jonathan Bomarito and Kuno Wittmer was stationary on pit lane for most of yesterday’s session, so Bomarito did well to narrowly eclipse his teammate Marc Goossens in the No. 91 this morning. However, that was only good enough for the V10 snakes to clock third and fourth in GT Le Mans because at the head of the line was the Risi Competizione Ferrari 458 Italia, with a 2min05.549sec. That time was just under 0.2sec faster than the GTLM championship favorites, Antonio Garcia and Jan Magnussen in the No. 3 Corvette C7.R.
The GT Daytona class was headed up by the Flying Lizard Motorsports Audi R8 LMS of Spencer Pumpelly who laid down a 2min10.427sec lap to beat the Porsche 911 GT Ams of Park Place Motorsports (Kevin Estre) and Magnus Racing (Andy Lally).
The GTD class looks particularly well balanced performance-wise around Road America, with nine-tenths of a second covering the top nine cars, with Audi R8s, Porsche 911s, a BMW Z4 and a Dodge Viper all in that mix.
An hour-long third practice session starts at 4.10pm ET, with qualifying starting 10mins after the conclusion of that practice.
