F1: 2015 Entry list has 22 cars, Marussia name has gone

Caterham and Marussia have appeared on the 2015 Formula 1 entrylist, despite both teams currently being in administration. However, each appears under different guises, with CF1 Caterham F1 Team has been entered under the 1Malaysia Racing Team banner, while the former Marussia team now reflects its origins. The entrant is Manor Grand Prix Racing and the team name is Manor F1 Team.

John Booth’s Manor team is one of the UK’s most succesful junior open-wheel squads, achieving phenomenal success in Formula Renault with drivers such as Kimi Raikkonen and Lewis Hamilton, as well as victories in both British and European F3 and now the GP3 Series, too. However, the team has struggled since arriving in Formula 1 for the 2010 season, first as Virgin Racing and lately as Marussia.

But 2014 has been the most extreme for the little team, with Jules Bianchi’s devastating crash at Suzuka set against a background of major financial troubles – and yet also the elation of a points finish in Monaco, against all odds. Since the Japanese Grand Prix, Marussia entered only one car (for regular driver at Max Chilton) and then – along with Caterham – missed the U.S. Grand Prix altogether. Both teams have gone into administration and will be absent from the grid in Brazil, too.

It’s unclear yet if either team will travel to the season finale in Abu Dhabi. It is, of course, dependent on their finding money both to travel/compete, but also pay the entry fee for the 2015 season. The deadline is November 30th.

Caterham’s situation, however, is reasonably hopeful. “I think I’ve got enough confidence now to say I’d be very surprised if we were not racing in Abu Dhabi,” Finbarr O’Connell, one of Caterham’s co-administrators representing Smith & Williamson, told BBC Sport. “I’m now really hopeful for the future of the team.”

However, both teams will still have to prove they are capable of competing satisfactorily for an entire season if they are to secure their places on the grid. The FIA has the right to ask for guarantees relating to infrastructure, budgets, and personnel in a bid to make sure that the teams are able to take part.

Here is the provisional entrylist for the 2015 FIA Formula 1 World Championship:
