Recent engineering changes at Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing could help the storied team rebound from a disappointing season in the Verizon IndyCar Series.
RLL parted ways with veteran engineers Bill Pappas and John Dick at the conclusion of the 2014 championship, and with driver Graham Rahal less than enthused about his 19th-place finish in the standings, a few adjustments and additions could help the 25-year-old move up the grid.
RLL’s Eddie Jones, who engineered the team’s second part-time entry, will become Rahal’s race engineer, veteran engineer Mike Talbott, who worked with Rahal at Newman/Haas Racing, will move from Wirth Research to look after vehicle dynamics, and Rahal’s former Ganassi Racing engineer Martin Pare has agreed to head the team’s damper department.
The complete restructuring of RLL’s engineering program should have a significant impact on the performance of Rahal’s No. 15 Honda.
“We’re understandably excited to have such high-caliber guys moving into positions that will take our IndyCar program to the next level,” RLL co-owner Bobby Rahal told RACER. “Eddie Jones has been one of the best in the business for as long as I’ve been in racing, and he and Graham get along really well, so we expect to see good things happening there.
“And Mike’s already had a notable influence; he’s not one of those guys who’s looking for the limelight–might not be a name everybody knows, but he brings a lot of experience to the table.”
Rahal was also enthused about bringing Pare back to IndyCar.
“I really thought he and Graham worked well together at Ganassi, and then he went home to look after his family and work with Multimatic on their damping and shaker rig stuff where he didn’t have to travel,” he added. “Bringing Martin in where he doesn’t have to do all of the travel and can use all of his expertise to help us with our damper program is a great fit for us, and hopefully for him. I think we have an incredibly strong engineering team—a stronger structure—to put beneath Graham with the group we’ve assembled.”
Rahal has also promoted Uwe Wolf to the role of race engineer within the BMW Team RLL TUDOR United SportsCar Championship program.
