IndyCar: Vautier back with Dale Coyne for Detroit

By

2013 IndyCar Series Rookie of the Year Tristan Vautier will get another chance to drive for Dale Coyne Racing after his efforts during last weekend’s Indy 500 were derailed by contact on pit lane with a teammate. Vautier was unable to comment when reached by RACER, but the team later confirmed the move via Twitter.

The Frenchman will pilot the No. 19 Honda and is coming off an impressive body of work at Indianapolis where he qualified the No. 19 DCR entry 21st for James Davison, who had a previous obligation in another series during time trials at the Speedway, and was then drafted in to pilot the No. 18 in the race for Carlos Huertas who was sidelined by an ongoing inner ear condition.

Vautier – and Davison – were taken out on pit lane lap 116 of the Indy 500 when Davison was sent from his pit box into the oncoming DCR car driven by Pippa Mann. Davison’s car bounced off Mann’s No. 63 and struck two of Vautier’s crew members before hitting the stationary No. 18. Damage to both cars led to their retirement. Prior to the accident, Davison held 19th and Vautier was running 22nd. Only Mann finished, coming home three laps down in 22nd.

Vautier replaces Italy’s Francesco Dracone, who only committed to the early road and street course races. It’s unclear whether Vautier, who also has a seat in Europe’s Blancpain Endurance Series, will continue with the team beyond Detroit.

Good news was reported by DCR Wednesday morning regarding Daniel Jang, who required ankle surgery after being hit by Davison. Jang will require a lengthy recovery period, but was released from the hospital and will continue his rehabilitation from home.

UPDATE: The team has confirmed that Rodolfo Gonzalez, who, made his series debut with the team at Barber, and will drive the #18 entry at Belle Isle.
