IMSA: Sellers states his case after win in Watkins Glen

By

Ohio native Bryan Sellers recorded his latest standout performance during last weekend’s Sahlen’s Six Hour at the Glen. With his mercurial teammate Wolf Henzler, the talented Falken Tire (Walker Racing) team, and their trusty Porsche 911 RSR working in unison, Sellers helped to secure the GT Le Mans victory as everything from rain, small rivers, to dry conditions kept the team on its toes from start to finish.

On a personal note, Sellers, who is a free agent at the end of the season when Falken exits IMSA, tells RACER capturing his sixth major sports car victory – all with Henzler, Falken, and Porsche – can only help draw attention to his growing body of work.

“That’s the goal. You hope every time you go out that people watch and notice,” he said. “I feel like my co-driver is one of the best the sport’s ever seen, and if you can go up against a guy like Wolf and succeed, you state your case. We always want to show with Falken that we’re not an underdog, that we’re capable of winning every race, and you hope people see that I’m not a Scott Pruett, yet, but I’m doing my best to get there.”

Sellers’ preference is to heap praise on his team, and he didn’t disappoint after a smart driver and sharp strategy calls moved the No. 17 Porsche ahead of factory teams from BMW Team RLL, Corvette Racing, and Porsche North America.

“What you saw this weekend was a team win,” he confirmed. “A lot of people will reduce the win to a win in the wet which has been Falken’s strength in the past, but if you followed the race, we held onto the chance to win in the middle of the race when we were on slicks, kept moving to the front of the field and, while we were strong, didn’t dominate in the wet. We had to drive really hard to be where we were. If it rained the whole race, I’m not sure we’d have been in the position we were in on Sunday.”

With five races left to run in the 2015 TUDOR United SportsCar Championship season, Sellers will be looking for more wins to improve his odds of landing another drive when the Falken program concludes. Winning the GTLM championship would be a challenge for the single-car program, but with five chances left to audition for the factory teams – or to catch the attention of a team owner in one of the other three classes – Sellers plans to remain focused on closing out the championship as strongly as possible.

“For me, that’s exactly what it is,” he noted. “Joey Hand and I have a saying that you’re only as good as your last race, and that’s my outlook; every race is an audition, and I don’t think that’s a bad thing. Our mindset is to go out strong with Falken, we’ve accomplished many things over the years, and we want this to be a positive end to a great relationship.”
