IMSA: Davison out, Wittmer in at TRG-AMR

TRG-AMR team owner Kevin Buckler’s plans to explore a deeper relationship with defending TUDOR United SportsCar Championship GT Le Mans champion Kuno Wittmer have been dramatically accelerated. The French-Canadian ace will replace James Davison for the remainder of the season, while Davison has been released by the California-based team.

Davison was forced to miss the most recent TUDOR Championship round in Watkins Glen due to the Australian’s conflict with his Nissan Pirelli World Challenge program, which paved the way for Wittmer to step in and partner with Christina Nielsen in the No. 007 Aston Martin V12 Vantage. Speaking with RACER last week, Buckler said he expected to expand his relationship with Wittmer at some point in the future, and the future arrived much sooner than expected.

“We are pleased to announce that GTLM reigning champion Kuno Wittmer will be joining TRG-AMR as Christina Nielsen’s co-driver in the Aston Martin GT3 No. 007 for the balance of the 2015 season,” Buckler said. “Kuno will serve in a variety of roles with the team including coaching, data, driver development, etc., and is looking forward to a solid finish to the season in the No. 007 car.”

TRG-AMR marks Wittmer’s first full-time drive since the factory Dodge Viper GTLM program concluded at the end of 2014. He won the GT Daytona class with Riley Technologies at the Rolex 24 at Daytona in January, and raced in the Continental Tire Series while searching for his next opportunity. With the No.007 and Nielsen, he inherits a program that has the Danish driver holding fourth in the Driver’s championship and a shot at moving her to the top of the standings with five races left to run.

“I am very pleased to joining TRG-AMR for the remainder of the year,” Wittmer (RIGHT) told RACER. “Teamed up with Christina, our Watkins Glen debut showed that we can win races. They have done so well for the first half of the season, and now it’s time to help Christina win this difficult championship.

“The TRG-AMR squad, run by Kevin Buckler, is a real class act – among the best in the paddock. It’s an honor to be joining them and to be teamed up with Christina. We have good strategies in place to take on our competition in this great series.”

Buckler also thanked Davison, who was unavailable for comment, for his efforts.

“James Davison has filled a great role with the team since first coming on board in 2013 but with his increased schedule and focus on other opportunities and roles, the very tight competition in GTD, and our increased sponsor commitments, we needed to make sure that all focus was on achieving our team, driver, sponsor, and manufacturer goals for the balance of 2015 season and beyond,” he added.

The next round of the TUDOR Championship takes place this weekend at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park where Prototype, PC, and GTLM will compete. The next round for TRG-AMR’s revised GTD lineup is at Lime Rock on July 24-25.
