Ricky Taylor turned the fastest lap during the opening practice session for the Mobil 1 Sportscar Grand Prix at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, posting a 1:10.451 in the No. 10 Wayne Taylor Racing Corvette DP on the rolling road course.
“The car is very good; we tested on Tuesday and we’re fresh and ready,” said Taylor. “We have a good Corvette here, but I think the Ligier has a little bit more pace in it.”
Michael Shank Racing’s Ozz Negri was just 0.165 seconds behind in the No. 60 Ligier JS P2-Honda (1:10.616), and Action Express Racing’s Dane Cameron kept the top-3 close with a lap of 1:10.660 in his No. 31 Corvette DP.
Nick Tandy posted the best lap in GT Le Mans (1:15.388) with the No. 911 Porsche 911 RSR as the session drew to a close, eclipsing Antonio Garcia (1:15.771) in the No. 3 Corvette C7.R and early pacesetter Earl Bamber (1:16.067) in the sister No. 912 Porsche 911 RSR.
PC was commanded by Colin Braun in the No. 54 CORE autosport entry (1:11.795), which was well clear of Renger van der Zande in the No. 8 Starworks Motorsport PC (1:12.142).
Teams lost 20 minutes of the hour-long session due to two accidents. The first red flag was caused by Lucas Luhr in the No. 24 BMW Team RLL Z4, who crashed and damaged the left-front corner of the V8-powered coupe at Turn 3. Mikhail Goikhberg followed with a spin and crash at Turn 5 that triggered the second stoppage after beaching himself in the No. 85 JDC/Miller PC entry.
FP2 begins at 4 p.m. ET.
