Rally: Higgins targeting US clean sweep

By

Rally America champion David Higgins can make history in 2015 as he bids to complete the perfect season with the Subaru Rally Team USA squad.

Higgins clinched his fifth-straight US title with a 12th successive rally win on the New England Forest Rally in Maine last month, and he is only two rounds away from completing a clean sweep this year.

“I’m not one for looking at how many rallies or championships we’ve won, as long as I’m still driving well, that’s all that matters to me,” Higgins said. “I’m involved in the biggest motorsport program Subaru is running right now, and I love it. I love driving and I feel I’m driving as well as ever and I love the team – we all work so well together.

“We have a huge following for the program in America, the fans are so passionate about what we do, it’s brilliant. As long as this continues and as long as I feel competitive I don’t want to stop. What’s really satisfying is that you can score on a maximum of six rallies each season and we’ve won the last two titles with six wins.”

Higgins’ hopes of winning every rally last year were dashed by an engine problem on the 100 Acre Wood Rally. The Manxman, who won the 2004 British Rally Championship, has now won a total of seven American titles, taking the SCCA series crown with Mitsubishi in 2002 and 2003.

The last two events on the Rally America schedule are Ojibwe Forests Rally in Minnesota later this month and the Lake Superior Performance Rally in Michigan in October.
