F3: Hitech name to return with Sims

By

The Hitech name will return to Formula 3 for a one-off outing in the next round of the European championship at the Algarve circuit, with Alexander Sims driving.

A new team – Hitech Grand Prix – will field a single Dallara-Mercedes for BMW GT works driver Sims for the early-September Portuguese round as it gears up for a full-time European F3 entry with two cars in 2016.

Hitech GP is fronted by David Hayle, who founded Hitech Racing in time for the 2003 British F3 season. He sold Hitech Racing in ’07 to Walter Grubmuller Sr, before the operation passed to Ryan Sharp. Its last year of operation was 2011.

The new team, which is operating from a facility in Silverstone, has undertaken a test program at Pembrey, Misano, Valencia and the Hungaroring with Sims – who last raced in F3 in the 2013 Macau Grand Prix – at the wheel. As the entry is not registered for the 2015 championship, Sims will not be eligible for points.

Although Hayle had already sold his old team, he remained on board at Hitech Racing in a team-principal role when it achieved its biggest F3 success, the 2007 British title with Marko Asmer.
