INDYCAR: Indy part of Clauson's 200 race bid

The days of A.J. Foyt, Dan Gurney, Parnelli Jones and Mario Andretti criss-crossing the country to drive different disciplines every weekend are long since gone, but Bryan Clauson is keeping their spirit alive.

Clauson announced Friday that, with the help of some good friends, he was going to attempt to run 200 oval races in 2016 – midgets, winged sprints, non- winged sprints and the 100th Indianapolis 500.

Billed as: “The Chasing 200 Tour, Circular Insanity”, Clauson will compete in his third Indy 500 thanks again to the Byrd family while wheeling a midget for Rusty Kunz and Joe Dooling, non-wing sprinters for Mike Martin and Dooling and a winged sprinter for Matt Wood Racing.

Once the face of the United States Auto Club, the 26-year-old Noblesville native decided he needed to branch out to make a decent living as a full-time open wheeler.

“I was running a USAC show at Perris for $5,000 to win, and the World of Outlaws was in Charlotte where it paid $12,000 so I thought I should make a career change,” said Clauson, who is competing in this weekend’s Knoxville Nationals on the fast, half-mile dirt track in Iowa. “I love running all kinds of cars, but you have to go where the money is.”

Fresh off his third victory in the Belleville Nationals for midgets, the four-time USAC champion has yet to break through with his initial WoO win in what is pretty much his rookie season with the winged sprinters that race all over the USA.

“Matt’s team is good and we’re getting our feet on the ground, we’ve just need to be a little quicker night in and night out,” continued Clauson, who has logged 13 midget/sprint wins so far in 2015.

“Switching back to a non-wing sprinter from a winged car takes a little adjustment because I always feel like I’m going so slow because the winged cars are so fast through the corners.”

For a guy who averages 150 races a year, where will the extra 50 come from?

“I’ll run the all of Pennsylvania speed weeks so that’s another six or seven, and I’ll run the full WoO schedule in Florida plus double up and run the 360 non-wing shows in California along with the 410 winged shows,” he replied.

“I’ve got to get a motorhome to live in but I’m looking forward to it. I think it’s something like 170 race nights but with the doubleheaders it’s 200.”

Ginny, David and Jonathan Byrd II put Clauson with KV Racing last May and they’re working on details for 2016 but he hopes to get a chance to run in an IndyCar prior to Indianapolis.

“I keep hearing Phoenix is going to be on the schedule in April, so if it happens I know the Byrd family is working on it because we want to be there,” he said. “Having a race under my belt before Indy would be great.”

And also push him over 200.
