Michael Marsal Racing VIR Pre-Race Report

By

Alton, Va. (18 August 2015) – Michael Marsal will be back in IMSA TUDOR United SportsCar race action with Turner Motorsport this weekend as the group travels to Virginia International Raceway for Round 8 of the 2015 Championship. Marsal will team with co-driver Markus Paltalla in the No. 97 Alvarez & Marsal / IHG Rewards Club BMW Z4 for the Oak Tree Grand Prix.

The duo is looking to bounce back from a difficult outing two weeks ago at Road America when the No. 97 machine was taken out of the race just nine laps in, after sustaining massive damage following contact with a PC car.

The team has turned the page onto VIR and his focused forward on the 3.27-mile Virginia road course.
The track, which winds its way through the Virginia countryside with both high speed sections and tighter more technical elements, is a popular one for Marsal and the team.

The track was the site of Marsal’s first-ever IMSA victory while driving for Turner Motorsport in the Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge Series. Marsal followed up that win with a fifth place finish the following year and a sixth place result when the series returned to the track in 2014.

Marsal stepped up to the TUDOR Championship ranks full time this year and will target similar success in the No. 97 Alvarez & Marsal / IHG Rewards Club BMW Z4.

The TUDOR Championship race will feature only the GT fields this weekend with 11 GTDs set to be joined by eight GTLM cars.

“VIR is an awesome track, and it is a place that Turner has been strong for years and years,” said Marsal. “Of course I’ve got some good memories there with Turner and hopefully we can have another big weekend like we did at Lime Rock. Hopefully the Z4 is strong there like it has been in the past. With just three races left in the season we need to make the most of each one to make a big push to close out the year.

The Oak Tree Grand Prix weekend will get underway on Friday with official practice. A third practice session and qualifying will take place on Saturday. A 20-minute warm-up will be held ahead of the 2 hour, 40 minute race on Sunday which is set to go green at 1:05 PM ET.
