Risi Competizione Ferrari Continues VIR Mastery in Opening Practice

Picking up where he left off last year, Pierre Kaffer ran a lap of 1:43.937 in the No. 62 Risi Competizione Ferrari F458 Italia to lead Friday’s opening TUDOR United SportsCar Championship practice for the Oak Tree Grand Prix at VIRginia International Raceway.

 
Kaffer established the GT Le Mans (GTLM) class record at VIR last year with a lap of 1:43.797, and then joined Giancarlo Fisichella in scoring a thrilling last-lap victory.
 
Kaffer’s track record will be on the line in qualifying on Saturday at 4:40 p.m. ET, which will be streamed live on IMSA.com and the IMSA mobile app. The race is set for 1 p.m. ET on Sunday and will be televised live on FOX Sports 1. 
 
Corvette Racing driver Antonio Garcia was second quickest in practice with a lap of 1:43.976 in the No. 3 Chevrolet Corvette C7.R, followed by Earl Bamber, who ran 1:44.184 in the No. 912 Porsche North America Porsche 911 RSR.
 
Kuno Wittmer was fastest in GT Daytona (GTD) with a lap of 1:48.779 in the No. 007 TRG-AMR Royal Purple/Orion Energy/LaSalle Solutions/PassTime USA/Mellow Mushroom Aston Martin Vantage he co-drives with class points leader Christina Nielsen.
 
Markus Palttala was second in the No. 97 Alvarez & Marsal/IHG Rewards Club BMW Z4, 1:48.790, followed by Andy Lally, 1:48.857 in the No. 44 Magnus Racing Flex-Box Porsche 911 GT America. The top nine GTD cars were separated by 0.856 seconds in the one-hour session.
