Looking to give the No. 62 Risi Competizione Ferrari its second consecutive TUDOR United SportsCar Championship victory at VIRginia International Raceway, Pierre Kaffer led both of Friday’s practice sessions for Sunday’s Oak Tree Grand Prix at VIR, unofficially breaking his own track record in the process.

Kaffer ran a best lap of 1:43.138 (114.138 mph) on the challenging 3.27-mile circuit. A year ago, co-driver Giancarlo Fisichella won the Oak Tree Grand Prix with a last-lap pass, after Kaffer established the track record with a lap of 1:43.797 (113.414 mph) in qualifying.

“We improved our car from today’s first to second sessions, but we saw that all the others improved also,” Kaffer said. “We are all very close. You cannot say we are dominating. At the moment, we are happy that we were at the front in both sessions, but tomorrow’s qualifying is a different story. The race, of course, is a different story. But right now I’m happy for the whole team – it’s been a long time since we’ve been in front.”

Patrick Pilet – seeking his third consecutive GTLM victory – was second with a lap of 1:43.210 (114.059 mph) in the No. 911 Porsche North America Porsche 911 RSR co-driven by Nick Tandy, followed by teammate Earl Bamber, 1:43.302 (113.957 mph) in the No. 912 entry co-driven by Joerg Bergmeister.

Spencer Pumpelly led the GTD competitors, running 1:48.128 (108.871 mph) in the No. 73 Park Place Porsche 911 GT America. Co-driver Patrick Lindsey will look to give the team its third TOTAL Pole Award in Saturday’s qualifying.

“Park Place Motorsports always shows up with good cars, and we dial them in and make them better,” said Pumpelly, a native of Mason Neck, Virginia. “We have a good strong car, and Patrick was right up to speed with me. The scary thing is, I think we might even make the car a little bit better. I always love coming back here. It’s always inspiring to drive around VIR, it’s such a great track with great fans.”

Markus Palttala was second in the No. 97 Alvarez & Marsal/IHG Rewards Club BMW Z4, 1:48.401 (108.597 mph), followed by Andy Lally, 1:48.759 (108.329 mph) in the No. 44 Magnus Racing Flex-Box Porsche 911 GT America.

The Oak Tree Grand Prix at VIR – the lone TUDOR Championship race showcasing the GT classes – takes the green flag on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET. The race will be broadcast live on FOX Sports 1.
