Whether you’re visiting Austin for the Lone Star Le Mans at Circuit of The Americas with your family, your friends, or on your own, we have a few suggestions so you can make the most of your stay in the Texas State Capitol.
Austin boasts a tremendous amount of great restaurants, hangouts, live-music venues and outdoor activities – this is in no way a comprehensive list, rather a broad stroke of the differing places the city has to offer.
Some may appeal, some may not. But, no matter what, enjoy yourself, the city, and especially, the weekend of great racing!
Eats:
Franklin Barbecue: You can’t visit Austin without visiting Franklin Barbecue and chowing down on some of the best barbecue out there. That being said, be prepared to arrive very early and wait a while for their famous brisket and other BBQ offerings.
Torchy’s Tacos: If you’re not a barbecue fan or you’ve had your fill of brisket and coleslaw, try Torchy’s Tacos – Trailer Park. Great tasting, inexpensive and quick, Torchy’s is great for families with children or if you’re dining on a budget.
Moonshine Patio Bar & Grill: Featuring American comfort food and a casual atmosphere, Moonshine Patio Bar & Grill is nestled in downtown Austin, perfect for an all-night hangout or to grab a bite before hitting the (in)famous 6th Street bars.
Nightlife:
Rainey Street: Don’t like loud music, cramped dancefloors or drinks spilled on you (really, who does anyway?) then Rainey Street is for you. Rainey Street Historic District (link) is a street of historic homes in downtown Austin featuring casual bars, dining and food trailers. Who doesn’t want to hang out at a bar made entirely from recycled shipping containers (insert link)?
6th Street: Disclaimer – 6th Street is not for everyone. This strip of bar in downtown ATX is known for its bars, clubs and live music. If you’re looking to let loose after a day at the track, this is the place to be.
Stubbs BBQ: Barbecue joint by day, open-air concert venue by night, Stubb’s Bar-B-Q boasts cold beer, live music and the renowned buffet-style Sunday Gospel Brunch.
Outdoors:
State Capitol: Don’t leave the Texas State Capitol without visiting the actual capitol building. This gorgeous landmark is open for tours Monday – Friday from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Saturday – Sunday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Lady Bird Lake Hike and Bike Trail: Not far from downtown Austin, the Lady Bird Lake Hike and Bike Trail features 10 miles of trails bordering Lady Bird Lake, perfect for runners, walkers and cyclists.
Sightseeing Tours: Everything from brewery tours to nature tours, there are a lot of ways to see and enjoy Austin – why not let someone guide you to the best spots? No matter your interests, there will be a sightseeing tour for you.
Of course, the whole reason you’re in Austin is to visit Circuit of The Americas and watch the best sports car racing from around the work compete on a world-class track. For tickets, visit
