The eBay charity auction that will benefit the family of Justin Wilson will launch tonight at 6 p.m. Pacific (9 p.m. Eastern). Visit http://stores.ebay.com/Celebrity-Charity-Auctions/JustinWilson-Memorial to participate.
Interested bidders will have a full six weeks to participate in the auction. All of the proceeds will go to the Wilson Children’s Fund, which was created after the race-winning driver lost his life on August 24.
“We are pleased that eBay can leverage our marketplace platform to help make a difference for the family of the late Justin Wilson,” said Devin Wenig, President and CEO of eBay. “During this six week eBay Giving Works auction, fans can join the racing community that has rallied behind the Wilson family and show their continued support.”
The opening days of the auction will feature more than 16 helmets donated by Wilson’s fellow IndyCar Series drivers after the season finale at Sonoma. Among those offerings, Scott Dixon’s championship-winning helmet and helmets from popular drivers like Juan Pablo Montoya and Helio Castroneves could generate significant interest. Wilson’s brother Stefan, who raced in the 2013 Baltimore Grand Prix with Justin, has donated his helmet–from the one and only time the Wilson brothers shared the track in IndyCar–for the auction.
A number of IndyCar drivers have also donated their race-worn driving suits including Wilson’s Andretti Autosport teammates Marco Andretti and Ryan Hunter-Reay, who is offering the suit that he wore during his Pocono win. 2014 IndyCar champion Will Power has donated a driving suit. And more will be arriving at Auction Cause, which is handling the administration of the charity event, in the coming days.
Wilson’s time as a Formula 1 driver has been recognized by more than half of the current grid. Reigning F1 world champion Lewis Hamilton and his teammate Nico Rosberg will sign the driving suits they wore at the Italian Grand Prix – won by Hamilton – and at this weekend’s Singapore GP, and both will be shipped for inclusion next week.
Toro Rosso is having Carlos Sainz Jr and Max Verstappen, RIGHT, sign their suits at Singapore before sending them, and Red Bull is sending a signed Daniel Ricciardo suit. Force India has sent a rear wing element signed by Nico Hulkenberg and Sergio Perez; McLaren’s Fernando Alonso is sending a driving suit, gloves, and shoes, and Jenson Button is donating the helmet he wore in Italy bearing Justin Wilson tribute stickers. Williams is also sending a care package for the auction. Former F1 driver Rubens Barrichello is donating one of his Ferrari driving suits. The Lotus F1 team and driver Romain Grosjean reached out on Tuesday to offer a signed pair of driving gloves.
In addition to the auction contributions made by F1’s drivers and teams, reports of the personal donations others have made to the Wilson Children’s Fund make it clear that some drivers have helped in significant ways that do not involve memorabilia contributions.
Meanwhile, at least 25 NASCAR drivers have contributed signed driving gear and other personal items. Six-time Sprint Cup Champion Jimmie Johnson has donated a signed suit, and Stewart/Haas Racing owner/driver Tony Stewart, and his drivers Kurt Busch, reigning Sprint Cup champion Kevin Harvick, and Danica Patrick have donated signed bodywork from their respective cars. Patrick has also given the auction a signed and framed pair of gloves.
Team Penske’s Brad Keselowski and Joey Logano have donated driving gear, and Dale Earnhardt Jr., Matt Kenseth, Jeff Gordon, Denny Hamlin, Ryan Newman, ABOVE, Kyle Larson, Clint Bowyer, and more have come through with dozens of items to assist the Wilson family.
The worlds of domestic and international sportscar racing have unified to support the cause. Wilson’s longtime team owner and close friend Michael Shank has reached into his personal collection to offer three items, LEFT, that should generate sizeable bids for the family: the suit Wilson wore to victory at the 2012 Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona with Michael Shank Racing, the helmet Wilson wore on MSR’s run to second overall in 2006, and the gloves Wilson wore earlier this year at the 12 Hours of Sebring in what would be his final appearance with the team.
IMSA’s GT manufacturers Aston Martin, Audi, BMW, Corvette Racing, Ferrari, Porsche, and Ford—which has yet to enter IMSA or the World Endurance Championship—have also come through with items, as have numerous factory drivers from those marques. Mazda is donating a driving suit, crew shirt, and bodywork from its Prototype program, and IMSA has two VIP Behind The Scenes packages going up for bid at Petit Le Mans (October 2-3) and January’s Rolex 24 at Daytona.
In the WEC, P1 manufacturers Audi, Porsche, Nissan, and Toyota have all contributed. Audi drivers are donating various pieces of driving gear; Porsche has given Mark Webber’s custom red driving suit, which was worn at this year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans, and which Webber will sign this weekend at the Circuit of The Americas WEC round. Actor/Porsche racer Patrick Dempsey is donating the bicycle he used to train for Le Mans in June, and might add another exclusive item to the auction after the WEC COTA event. Nissan is offering a full day of its GT Academy training at the Silverstone circuit in England, and has other donations in the works. Toyota is offering VIP tickets and hospitality at an upcoming WEC event, and some of their drivers are donating personal driving gear.
Elsewhere, reality TV star and off-road racer Arie Luyendyk Jr is donating the driving suit he wore while earning a bronze medal at this year’s X-Games. Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason—an avid vintage race car driver—has donated a gold record from the group. The Who lead singer Roger Daltrey is donating a signed microphone. Wilson’s helmet painter, Michael Corby, and his helmet manufacturer, Arai, have come together to create a replica helmet bearing Wilson’s unmistakeable livery. Microsoft is donating an XboX gaming console and games. Michael Goodwin is donating a sign with more than 200 driver signatures from the Rolex 24, which includes an autograph from Justin Wilson. Watches are being donated, along with multiple paintings, photos, prints, and photo collages, and items from the NFL, NBA, NHL, and MLB are streaming in.
More items will be added to the auction in the days and weeks ahead, and as new teams, drivers, and supporters reach out to the JWilsonAuction@Gmail.com email address to donate items, the list will surely grow.
