When it comes to Porsche, the name Donohue and the colors of Sunoco are synonymous with the German brand, and thanks to a renowned team owner, Porsche’s illustrious past has been carried forward into present day.
Veteran Porsche crew chief, shop owner, and vintage racing specialist Kevin Jeanette couldn’t wait to create a new piece of history for the marque to be unveiled at this weekend’s Rennsport Reunion V being held in Monterey, and with an unraced RS Spyder in his care, the father of pro racer Gunnar Jeanette brought the iconic livery from Mark Donohue’s Porsche 917/30 and Mark’s son David together in grand style.
“I fell in love with it the moment I saw it,” David Donohue told RACER. “Every Porsche fan wants to drive a RS Spyder, and I get to drive it in a livery that’s in honor of my dad, and Roger Penske and everything they did together with Porsche. It’s unimaginable. I’m so lucky to know Kevin who put this together and to have this livery and scheme that works so well on a contemporary car.”
The background on the chassis is also interesting. It was the RS Spyder bought by the Florida-based Solaroli Motorsports team that, infamously, led to Porsche repossessing the car before it was used in the American Le Mans Series.
With the car returned to Porsche Motorsport in Germany, the chassis was used for testing purposes, yet remains as the only RS Spyder that does not have a competition history. In the hands of Donohue, the No. 6 RS Spyder – which obviously lacked a period-correct livery for use at Rennsport – has been dressed in possibly the most attractive livery seen on Porsche’s defining, championship- and Le Mans-winning LMP2 model.
“This is such a fantastic event where you get to see so many friends, old mechanics, driving legends, and it’s hard to take everything in that Porsche has brought to Monterey,” Donohue added. “And I get to drive this amazing RS Spyder.”
