Francois Delecour intends to defend his crown in the FIA R-GT Cup for rallying sports cars in 2016.
The four-time World Rally Championship event winner became champion in the inaugural R-GT series with a round to spare thanks to a second victory in four rounds in Corsica earlier this month. Delecour, who drives a Porsche 911 prepared by Richard Tuthill’s British-based team, still plans to contest the finale in Valais in Switzerland next month.
“One of my ambitions was to bring the Porsche name back to the World Rally Championship and with Richard we have done that,” he said. “This has been a fantastic year and I am definitely pushing to come back again next year to do it again.”
There is potential for regulation change that could help bring more power back to the restricted 911, something Delecour is firmly in favor of.
“Running with the changes to the restrictor would really help us,” he said. “It would make the cars even more special.”
Delecour’s only regular competition in the inaugural R-GT Cup was 2010 Le Mans 24 Hours winner Romain Dumas. The FIA created the R-GT championship in a bid to increase the number of GT cars participating in top-level rallies. Its calendar is split across selected asphalt rounds of the WRC and
European Rally Championship.
