Christina Nielsen and the TRG-AMR team became one of IMSA’s most compelling storylines in 2015, and it appears the talented Dane will return for another championship run in GT Daytona, albeit with a different program.
“I’m counting on being back in the WeatherTech Championship, but I can’t reveal yet where I’m going to go,” she told RACER. “We have a few people we’ve been speaking with, and I need to say thank you to them for considering us next year, and I need to finish the process before we reveal anything.”
Partnered with James Davison through Detroit, Nielsen completed the season with Kuno Wittmer in the No. 007 Aston Martin V12 Vantage and went into the season finale with a slim one-point lead in the Drivers’ championship.
TRG-AMR would go on to surrender the GTD Teams’ title and Nielsen ultimately settled for second in the Drivers’ standings behind Scuderia Corsa’s Townsend Bell and Bill Sweedler. With Bell and Sweedler departing the Ferrari GTD program for Lamborghini, Nielsen is rumored to be joining Scuderia Corsa once negotiations are completed.
“The championship is my number one goal for next year,” Nielsen said. “It will be two different mindsets from last year to this year in the sense that I didn’t go into [2015] expecting to win the championship, and I don’t believe you should rush your expectations. I’m going to aim for the championship, for sure, but I think it’s still important to take a step back and evaluate what you can do to improve so I am good enough. I can’t wait to get to Daytona to get started.”
