Andretti Autosport’s Ryan Hunter-Reay has an Indy 500 win, a Verizon IndyCar Series championship, and is determined to add a victory at the Rolex 24 at Daytona to his resume. All the sports car-loving open-wheel ace needs is a seat to make it possible, and he says discussions are taking place to make his 10th start in the great endurance race.
“I have some things brewing, but nothing concrete at the moment, although I hope to get some direction here pretty soon,” RHR told RACER.
Hunter-Reay has been among the most active open-wheelers to cross over and compete in sports cars. Outside of his IndyCar obligations, the 34-year-old has been a steady presence in IMSA’s TUDOR United SportsCar Championship as a member of the factory Dodge Viper Tequila Patron North American Endurance cup program and as part of Starworks Motorsport’s Prototype effort. And prior to their merger, RHR was a regular competitor in the American Le Mans Series and Grand-Am Rolex Series.
Coming off a fruitless run at the Rolex 24 in January, RHR is hunting for something that will allow him to improve upon the second-place finish he earned with Wayne Taylor Racing in 2013 (RIGHT).
“I’ve done sports car racing pretty much my whole career, and it’s something I find is a necessary outlet for me to go alongside what I do in IndyCar,” he said. “Every time I’ve gone to Daytona, I’ve gone there to win and I want nothing more than to finally get the job done with a team.
“And, as a driver, I find racing sports cars always benefits me. I always grow and become a better driver, and I pick up a lot of things from new co-drivers and their driving styles. It keeps me fresh to new ideas which helps when I get in my Indy car.”
