Victories In Prototype, GTD Contribute To Standing

Dane Cameron won races in two different classes in 2015, becoming the all-time leader in the two-year history of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship with seven victories.

Cameron won a pair of Prototype events in the Action Express Racing No. 31 Whelen Engineering/Team Fox Corvette DP, while joining Turner Motorsport in a substitute role at Lime Rock Park in winning the GT Daytona (GTD) class. Adding Cameron’s four victories from his 2014 GTD championship season with Turner Motorsport, he now has seven career victories in the WeatherTech Championship, and is the lone driver to win in multiple classes in the same season.

“I’m proud of that achievement, and I hope to be able to keep the record of being the winningest driver in the WeatherTech Championship for many years to come,” Cameron said. “Hopefully, I can win in another category or two by the time my career’s over. I’m really fortunate to drive for two great teams in Turner Motorsport and Action Express Racing. Having great teams, great cars and great teammates allows you to do that.

“It’s incredibly tough to win races in IMSA,” Cameron added. “You need so much luck, and you need a lot of things to go right to win races, especially at this level of competition. So I’m really proud to have that achievement for the moment, and I hope to keep winning races for many years to come.”

Cameron and co-driver Eric Curran won at Detroit and Road America in 2015, finishing third in the Prototype standings – only five points behind championship-winning teammates Christian Fittipaldi and Joao Barbosa. He co-drove with Michael Marsal in the victory at Lime Rock, substituting for Markus Palttala. Cameron and Curran are set to return to the No. 31 Whelen Engineering/Team Fox Corvette DP for 2016.

Cameron also leads two additional categories on the all-time list. Racing double-duty gave him the most starts with 23, while he also captured the fastest lap of a race on five occasions.

Among the other all-time WeatherTech Championship records:

· Four drivers are second on the list with six victories. Jon Bennett and Colin Braun lead the Prototype Challenge (PC) class, while Antonio Garcia and Jan Magnussen lead GT Le Mans (GTLM).

· Cameron also shares the lead in GTD victories with Ben Keating with five each.

· In addition, Cameron is one of two drivers to win in different classes. Kuno Wittmer won two races en route to the 2014 GTLM title, and won the GTD class in the Rolex 24 in 2015.

· Fittipaldi and Barbosa led the Prototype class with five victories and two championships in the Action Express Racing No. 5 Mustang Sampling Corvette DP.

· Chevrolet is the all-time leading winner among the manufacturers, with 20 victories – 14 in Prototype and six in GTLM.

· CORE autosport has 12 victories to lead the WeatherTech Championship teams, winning six races in GTLM (partnering with Porsche North America) and in PC.

· James Davison won the GTD pole for the 2015 Rolex 24 at Daytona to lead all drivers with five career TOTAL Pole Awards. Dion von Moltke is second, winning all four of his poles in 2015.
