O'Gara Motorsport Post-Roar Report

By

Debuting IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship team O’Gara Motorsport put in a productive three days of testing this weekend at the Roar Before the Rolex 24 At Daytona where team drivers Bill Sweedler, Townsend Bell, Edoardo Piscopo and Richard Antinucci all logged laps in the team’s No. 11 GT Daytona (GTD) class Lamborghini Huracán GT3 at Daytona International Speedway (DIS).

O’Gara Motorsport, which is moving up to IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship GTD competition in 2016 after a championship-winning season last year in the IMSA Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America series, will debut in the Rolex 24 At Daytona back at DIS at the end of January.

The Roar was the team’s first-ever GTD effort in an IMSA-sanctioned event and also marked the first multi-day test for O’Gara Motorsport’s 2016 team, which includes the addition of full-season drivers and reigning GTD Champions Sweedler and Bell.

“I am very satisfied,” Bell said. “With the objectives that we had laid out, you always kind of plan on what you want to achieve if you don’t have any problems, and by and large we ticked off all of those boxes. For a young team with a big kind of to-do list that might not be as traditional as established teams, I think we made a tremendous amount of headway.”

O’Gara’s debut at the Roar came just days after the recent Holiday season and a month after taking delivery of its Lamborghini Huracán GT3 at the team race shop in Southern California.

“I am proud of the guys who, pretty much like most of the teams in the paddock I would expect, worked straight through the Holidays,” Bell said. “It was a huge effort to get here, and to have the car run all three days with no major issues and check off what we needed to accomplish is a job well done.”

Antinucci, who will be making his Rolex 24 debut, had only a dozen laps in a test at Daytona last November to his credit before returning to the “World Center of Racing” this weekend.

“I feel great and I believe the whole team in general feels the same way,” said Antinucci, the 2015 Lamborghini Super Trofeo Huracán Pro Driver Champion. “Our learning curve is 200% right now being that the car is new and we have had zero testing with our car, so we went through all of the teething problems that a new chassis and team have. I am absorbing from our experienced peers like Townsend and Bill Sweedler and our engineers as much as possible to get up to pace, be cohesive and add to the synergy that you need to survive and excel in these type of endurance races.”

Piscopo, an Italian who is also preparing for his Rolex 24 At Daytona, had never even been to Daytona before this past Thursday.

“It’s a very steep learning curve for me because it was my first time here but I enjoyed it a lot,” Piscopo said. “As a team we are working on every small detail, every session we get better and I really have a good feeling about it. Overall, it is a question of being smart, being focused and staying sharp and I really don’t see that as a problem. I love new challenges and this is a new challenge.”

Sweedler participated in all three days of the test but had to leave Daytona before the weekend’s final on-track session Sunday afternoon.

“I think this car was made for Bill Sweedler,” Bell said. “I have never seen him jump in something and be so comfortable so quickly, probably more comfortable than the other three of us. This car really fits his driving style and that’s very exciting for the balance of the season.”

Next up for O’Gara Motorsport is the season-opening Rolex 24 At Daytona, January 28 – 31, at Daytona International Speedway. The race can be seen live in a schedule of programming on the FOX Sports Networks.
