WRC: Injured Sordo could miss Finland after crash

Dani Sordo

Hyundai World Rally Championship driver Dani Sordo has fractured a vertebra in a crash during his pre-Rally Finland test.

Both the Spaniard and co-driver Marc Marti spent Friday night in hospital following the accident and both were discharged the following day.

Marti escaped injury, while Sordo is nursing the fracture at home.

A suspension arm broke on landing after a jump, sending the car into a big impact with a rock.

Sordo’s participation in Rally Finland, which starts on July 28, is now in doubt.

If he is not fit for Jyvaskyla, Hyundai’s fourth driver Kevin Abbring would likely be pressed into action in his place. Abbring came off the bench for Sordo at last year’s Rally Sweden after the Spaniard fell off his mountain bike and broke ribs.

If Abbring and co-driver Seb Marshall do start, it will be their competition debut in a New Generation i20 WRC having used the older car for their part-season so far.

While Sordo recovers, Hyundai is working on rebuilding the test car and a new plan for Thierry Neuville and Hayden Paddon to test for the next round of the championship.

The team has cancelled Paddon’s entry on this weekend’s Autoglym Rally, which runs close to Tampere.

A spokesperson for the team said: “The test days have been rescheduled for later this month just before Finland. At the moment, we have no confirmation if Dani will be fit for Finland.”
