Defending NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Kyle Busch won the ESPY Award for Best Driver Wednesday at the Microsoft Theater in downtown Los Angeles.

After missing the first 11 points races last season with a broken leg and foot as a result of a massive crash in the Xfinity Series season opener at Daytona, the 2005 Sprint Cup rookie of the year roared back, dominating races in all three national series. In 2015, he won five times in Sprint Cup – including the season finale and championship-clinching race at Homestead – six in Xfinity and twice in trucks.

So far in 2016, he has three Sprint Cup wins (consecutive weekends at Martinsville and Texas and a win at Kansas), five wins in nine Xfinity starts and one win in three Camping World Truck Series starts. He sits sixth in the Sprint Cup driver standings, 78 points behind leader Kevin Harvick.

Also nominated were four-time IndyCar Series champion Scott Dixon, three-time Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton, 2016 Indianapolis 500 winner Alexander Rossi and two-time defending NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series Pro Stock champion Erica Enders-Stevens. Harvick won the 2015 Best Driver ESPY. NASCAR drivers have won the category eight of the last ten years, with Busch joining Harvick, Tony Stewart and Jimmie Johnson on the list of winners.

The 24th annual awards show, which celebrates the year’s best athletes and moments in sports, was hosted by WWE star/actor John Cena. Winners are determined by fan vote in most categories.
