There is little doubt that Rob MacCachren will leave the Lucas Oil Fight Under the Lights presented by Optima Batteries at Lake Elsinore Motorsports Park as the Pro 2 champion. He need only start the final three races to be officially crowned once again, and chances are he’s going to do much more than start in the two races this weekend. He’s been on a tear in the last few rounds, and he’s already won once at Lake Elsinore this year.
However, the other classes are getting more interesting as the season winds down. Kyle LeDuc has been on a similar run of victories in Pro 4 as MacCachren has in Pro 2, with five victories in the last four doubleheader weekends. That has launched him past MacCachren in the points and within short striking distance of Carl Renezeder. It’s a tight two-way fight for Pro 4, and even MacCachren still has a shot.
Pro Buggy is exceptionally tight, with less than 20 points separating the top four: defending champion Garrett George, Mike Valentine, Darren Hardesty and Kevin McCullough. There are no patterns to the victories, though, so making any predictions would be foolish. If this class has shown anything in 2016, it’s that any one of these drivers, and indeed most of the field, can win on any given weekend.
Jerett Brooks has solidified his lead in Pro Lite, but Brandon Arthur is still within striking distance. Ryan Beat doesn’t have much chance to catch Brooks, but he could easily surpass Arthur for second if Arthur has a tough weekend and Beat continues the hot streak he’s been riding.
Even Mod Kart has a tight, three-way battle for the championship. Hailie Deegan leads going into Lake Elsinore, but Trey Gibbs and Christopher Polvoorde are close. These three drivers have taken the last four wins; Gibbs has two of those and has been the most consistent.
Many of the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series Drivers will be running special gold-themed liveries in recognition of Child Cancer Awareness Month. Several of the drivers are visiting young cancer patients at Loma Linda Hospital this week, and the series hosted a fundraising poker tournament with proceeds supporting the Jessie Rees Foundation.
Spectator gates for the night races at Lake Elsinore open at 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
