Bayne forced to backup for Texas

Three Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series drivers will be in backup cars for Sunday’s O’Reilly Auto Parts 500 (1:30 p.m. ET, FOX) at Texas Motor Speedway. Trevor Bayne is the most recent addition following a crash early in final practice Saturday afternoon when he got out of the groove in Turn 2 and slammed the outside wall.

Bayne will start at the rear of the field with Erik Jones and Chase Elliott, who are also in backup cars following accidents Friday. Prior to his accident, Bayne had put down the fastest lap in the session before ending up 10th on the board.

Roush Fenway Racing was able to get the backup car prepared in time for Bayne to get some laps in before practice ended.

“I’m incredibly sorry to my team,” Bayne said. “Basically, I wrecked the fastest car I’ve ever had. I got loose into (Turn) 1 and touched the gray there and if you get out of the groove by a centimeter it’s gone. It’s unfortunate. I know that, I just stepped over the edge. We had a super-fast racecar. I’m hoping our backup can get there. That was the fastest car I ever had and I wrecked it. I’m really mad at myself.”

Additionally, with less than five minutes remaining in the session, Kasey Kahne slapped the wall off Turn 2, damaging the right side of his No. 5 Chevrolet. At the conclusion of practice there was no word if Hendrick Motorsports was going to repair Kahne’s car or go to a backup.

Six-time Texas winner Jimmie Johnson was fastest in final practice at 194.812 mph over his Hendrick Motorsports teammate Chase Elliott (194.252 mph), Kyle Larson (193.618 mph), Aric Almirola (193.555 mph), and Matt Kenseth (193.465). Johnson is another driver starting at the rear of the field Sunday after he spun in qualifying.

The rest of the top 10 were Daniel Suarez (193.340 mph), Dale Earnhardt Jr. (193.023 mph), Kyle Busch (193.016 mph), Brad Keselowski (192.954 mph), and Bayne (192.781 mph).
Pole-sitter Kevin Harvick was 12th fastest in the session at 192. 417 mph.

Keselowski, Larson, Ty Dillon, Earnhardt Jr., and Elliott were the fastest five in the first practice session Saturday morning. Joey Logano, AJ Allmendinger, Kurt Busch, Almirola, and Kenseth rounded out the top 10.
