Charlotte Motor Speedway has moved its October playoff race to Sunday afternoon, the track announced Thursday.
The Bank of America 500 will now be run Oct. 8 at 2 p.m. ET instead of its previous slot on Saturday night. It will be the first time since 2002 that Charlotte has had a scheduled Sunday race in the fall.
“We’ve heard from fans and from several drivers about how much fun it is to race during the daytime at Charlotte Motor Speedway,” said Marcus Smith, speedway president and general manager, in a track release. “A return to ‘Daylight Racing Time’ also builds on our commitment to being ‘FANS FIRST’ by providing families with affordable, world-class entertainment on a Sunday afternoon. Everyone should set their clocks for ‘Daylight Racing Time,’ because it’s going to be an unforgettable weekend of racing.”
Charlotte is the fourth race in the playoffs and the first of the second round. With its move to Sunday, there will be no night races in this year’s edition of the playoffs.
“Charlotte’s so tricky, especially when the sun’s out,” said Jimmie Johnson, who won last year’s playoff race at Charlotte. “And, the track’s finally aging and getting to a place with a lot of character (so) that a day race will allow us to run so many more lanes and, I think, create such an entertaining and compelling race … I’m really excited for a hot, slick, day race.”
It was also announced Thursday that the playoff race at Martinsville Speedway has been moved from a 1 p.m. ET start to a 3 p.m. ET start.
