Persistent intermittent rain forced the cancellation of Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series qualifying at Bristol Motor Speedway, meaning current points leader Kyle Larson will start from the pole. It will mark the third race this season that Larson will start from the first position.
“It’s been a good season for us,” Larson said. “Our racecars are really fast, I’ve scored stage points in all but one of the stages, so that’s important to be the point leader. You’ve got to be running top 10 every race to gain as many points as you can. Our race cars have been extremely good to allow us to run up front like that.
“It’s nice to be the point leader and be starting up front here at Bristol. I always race really well here, I just don’t ever qualify good, so being handed the pole like this will hopefully help us out.”
Chase Elliott sits second in the point standings and will make it an all-Chevy front row by starting on the outside next to Larson. Martin Truex Jr. Brad Keselowski and Joey Logano round out the top five.
Because of the weather, there will now be one scheduled 55-minute practice each for the Cup and Xfinity series on Friday. There are 39 entrants for the Cup race.
Saturday’s schedule will start at 8:30 a.m. ET with Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series practice and a second session at 11 a.m. The Xfinity Series will qualify at 9:35 a.m ahead of the Fitzgerald Glider Kits 300 (1 p.m. ET, FS1), the second of four Dash 4 Cash events.
