Alonso 500 ride 'really big' for motorsport - Montoya

Juan Pablo Montoya wouldn’t rule out running a stock car again – but he’s not actively seeking out an opportunity, either.

“They tell me to go here, I go there,” Montoya said with a shrug and a laugh when asked if he was interested or wanted to drive a ride in NASCAR again. “They say jump, I say, ‘How high?'”

Montoya made an appearance at Bristol Motor Speedway Saturday morning with Team Penske to unveil his sponsor for the Indianapolis 500 – Fitzgerald Glider Kits, which will also be the sponsor for Brad Keselowski’s Ford Fusion at the May 7 spring race at Talladega and the fall race at Richmond International Raceway on September 9. The Fitzgerald livery is making its debut this weekend on the No. 2 IndyCar driven by Josef Newgarden in the Indy Grand Prix of Alabama at Barber Motorsports Park.

While he’s no longer competing with the organization full-time, Montoya will run both the Grand Prix of Indianapolis and the Indianapolis 500 in the No. 22 Team Penske Chevy.

With the motorsports world still buzzing about Formula 1 driver Fernando Alonso opting out of the prestigious Monaco Grand Prix to run the Indianapolis 500, Montoya also weighed in on his expectations for his former rival, whom he raced against in F1 from 2001-06.

“If you would have thought I would ever race against Alonso would be an endurance race or something, not in Indy to be honest,” said Montoya. “I think it’s great. Having Fernando is going to be really good day for motorsports, not only for IndyCar but I think the attention overall for seeing Fernando and myself and everybody running Indy, is going to be really big.”

Opinions have varied on how Alonso will adapt to racing on an oval, but Montoya thinks a day of testing will help him adjust.

“I think with a full day testing [Alonso will] get a bit of an idea what he needs and it’s good to have a day with no pressure, where he can build up and understand what it takes,” he said. “I think he’ll be fine. He’s with a good team, Andretti always runs good there, as well. Be interesting.”

In addition to talking about his search for a third Indianapolis 500 win, Montoya was asked about NASCAR, where he competed full-time from 2007 through 2013. He won Rookie of the Year honors in 2007 and earned two wins before heading back to open-wheel cars in 2014.

When asked if he missed stock cars, Montoya’s answer was simple.

“Stock car race was fun, but I don’t miss the every week thing,” Montoya said. “I don’t miss it at all. If you have kids and family, honestly, no need.”

Given the recent Alonso news, many have wondered about other motorsports drivers trying a different discipline. Lewis Hamilton also recently expressed interest in one day competing in the Daytona 500.

Montoya likes the idea of drivers going out of their comfort zone but says it has to be done the right way. Which is the way he would again return to NASCAR, at least for one race.

“If Roger [Penske] would say, ‘Hey, we got another car, would you run Daytona?’ I’d probably say yes. But it needs to be done with the proper team. If it’s a proper team, it would be exciting.

“I think it would be nice for motorsports to do a little more [driver crossover] because it’s just going to create a little more interest overall. It’s something that would be nice to see all of motorsports to be able to see top drivers jump from one to another just for one race. I was lucky enough to be in all the top series in world, and being able to win in all of them and everything.”
