Richard Petty Motorsports was issued an L1-level penalty by NASCAR on Wednesday after Aric Almirola’s No. 43 Ford failed post-race inspection at Talladega Superspeedway.

Almirola finished fourth in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series GEICO 500 but failed the Laser Inspection Station (LIS). The NASCAR penalty report lists the infraction as “failed post-race rear wheel steer” under the “post-race general inspection measurements.”

As a result, the finish has been ruled encumbered and crew chief Drew Blickensderfer (pictured) has been fined $65,000 and suspended from the next three Cup Series points races (Kansas, the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte and Dover). Richard Petty Motorsports has also been docked 35 driver and owner points.

RPM released a statement saying the team will not appeal.

“We accept NASCAR’s decision and will continue to work to get the most out of our race cars every week while maintaining the NASCAR rulebook,” director of competition Philippe Lopez said. “We look forward to Kansas this weekend.”

Director of engineering Scott McDougall will be the interim crew chief for Almirola during the suspension.

According to Almirola, he told NBC Sports reporter Marty Snider the infraction was 0.01 of an inch beyond tolerance.

“It’s less than the thickness of a credit card, but it’s the rules,” Almirola said.

Also from Talladega, the No. 7 team of Tommy Baldwin Racing was penalized for not having a lug nut properly secured. Crew chief Ken Davis has been fined $10,000.
