Almirola hospitalized after Kansas wreck

By

Aric Almirola (pictured, Russell LaBounty/LAT photo) had to be cut out of his No. 43 Ford at Kansas Speedway after being collected in a vicious crash in Turn 2 on Lap 200 of the Go Bowling 400.

Joey Logano said something broke on his No. 22 Ford going into Turn 1, which saw him hook the right-rear quarterpanel of Danica Patrick’s car. After both Logano and Patrick made heavy contract with the outside wall, igniting a fire in Patrick’s car, Almirola collided with the driver’s side of Logano’s car.

The rear of Almirola’s car went airborne before sitting back down and coming to rest along the backstretch wall.

The roof of Almirola’s car was removed in order for safety and medical crews to remove Almirola and load him into an ambulance. Almirola has been airlifted to the University Kansas Medical Center for observation.

Logano and Patrick were evaluated and released from the infield care center.

“All of us took a hard hit,” Logano said. “Something broke on the car, I don’t know what it was. I noticed it going in (to the turn) and tried to back off but you’re going 215 (mph). I just hope everyone is OK … The right-front popped and I took a hard left. I hope Aric is all right. That’s the last thing you want to see is a big hit like that for anyone.”

Added Patrick: “Unfortunately, there were two of us that got collected and while I am OK, one of these times one of these really big accidents, someone is not going to be OK. Aric is not OK and his car looked the best of everybody. You never know when it is going to be the wrong hit.”
