Kyle Larson was fastest in Monster Energy All-Star Race practice as teams got their first taste of the prime and option tire.
Goodyear Racing provided teams with one set of option tires to use in practice ahead of Saturday night’s race to get an idea of what the difference between the two would be. The drivers who put the tires on quickly jumped to the top of the leaderboard.
The option tire is expected to be three-tenths to half a second quicker than the prime tires.
Larson, who spun early in the session, was fastest at 189.274 mph over Kevin Harvick at 189.095 mph, Brad Keselowski at 188.976 mph, Kyle Busch at 188.594 mph, and Martin Truex Jr. at 188.232 mph.
The rest of the top 10 were Kurt Busch (188.081 mph), Jimmie Johnson (187.865 mph), Ryan Newman (187.735 mph), Denny Hamlin (187.220 mph), and Matt Kenseth (187.00 mph).

Teams were also given the opportunity to practice coming to pit road during the session. Qualifying for the All-Star Race, which will be held Friday night, is unique as it requires a mandatory four-tire pit stop. However, there is no pit road speed limit, meaning drivers want to get on and off pit road as fast as they can since it factors into his or her time.
Two Joe Gibbs Racing drivers wound up in trouble during this part of the session.
Denny Hamlin will go to a backup car after hitting the wall in Turn 4 and damaging the right rear of his No. 11. Hamlin’s teammate, Kyle Busch, avoided contact but spun his No. 18 in Turn 4 trying to get to pit road during his run.
“I have no idea [what happened]; it was so weird,” Hamlin said. “I left pit road out of the garage and I went up through the gears through (Turns) 1 and 2, pulled up on the race track – the car just, it didn’t feel right. It didn’t feel right at all.
“I went into Turn 3 a little bit hesitant to try to just see what was going on with the car and it just – it was backwards as soon as I let out of the gas. Really weird. Not really sure. It’s almost like the left-side air pressure is in the right. We put back on our race-trim tires that we had practiced on so they should’ve been fine. I don’t know. It’s definitely something out of sorts.”
