The 2018 schedules for all three NASCAR national series were released this afternoon with the Monster Energy Cup Series schedule featuring major shakeups.

Among the major changes:

Although the Brickyard 400 will remain on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval, the race is moving to September 9 and will become the cutoff race for making the playoffs. Richmond International Raceway moves from the regular-season finale to the second race of the playoffs. And Charlotte, which will be the first elimination race of the playoffs, will be now run on the road course.

“Charlotte Motor Speedway has always been about innovation,” said Marcus Smith, president and chief executive officer of Speedway Motorsports, Inc. “Hosting the first road course race in NASCAR’s Playoffs, as well as the drama of closing out the Playoffs’ first round, means that tension will be high and competition will be fierce as soon as the green flag drops.

“Fans are going to be in for a thrill, and drivers had better be ready for the most physically and mentally challenging race in the Playoffs. With a 35-foot elevation change between Turn 4 and Turn 10, drivers in next year’s Bank of America 500 will truly experience the highest of highs and the lowest of lows.”

Chicagoland Speedway, which had been the home of the playoff opener, moves to early July (ahead of Daytona). The second Las Vegas race, which was announced earlier this year, is now the playoff opener.

The season will again start on Feb. 18 with the Daytona 500, followed by what has become the traditional stops of Atlanta, Las Vegas, Phoenix and Auto Club Speedway.

Homestead-Miami Speedway will continue to host NASCAR championship weekend.
