Tequila Patron ESM earned a fine distinction in the second Watkins Glen practice session on Friday by securing the first 1-2 for its Nissan Onroak DPis. High winds, warm temperatures and the lingering threat of rain visited the 3.4-mile road course as Pipo Derani set a 1m34.696s lap in his No. 2 Nissan to lead Bruno Senna (+0.597s) in the sister No. 22. PR1/Mathiasen Motorsports’ Olivier Pla was third (+0.681s) in the No. 52 WEC P2-spec Ligier JS P217-Gibson.
The all-conquering Cadillac DPi-V.R could only manage fourth (+0.706s) in the hands of Wayne Taylor Racing’s Ricky Taylor. Mazda’s pair of RT24-P DPis were the two slowest cars in the Prototype class, more than three seconds adrift from Derani’s Nissan.
The unexpected absence of a Cadillac atop at least one session during a day of WeatherTech SportsCar Championship running was something new for IMSA. WTR’s Jordan Taylor attributed the DPi-V.R’s diminished pace to the sweeping Balance of Performance penalties applied to the Cadillac at the most recent round in Detroit.
“I think this is as expected with all of the BoP changes that have come out this year; we’ve expected [the other DPis] to be fast, but they haven’t put it together,” Taylor told IMSA Radio.
The effect of those BoP changes around a slow, tight street course were destined to be less dramatic than how they would impact the WTR and Action Express Racing DPi-V.Rs at The Glen.
In PC, Performance Tech Motorsports’ Pato O’Ward (1m39.347s) was 1.066 seconds faster than Gustavo Yacaman in his BAR1 Racing entry, but also brought out the red flag by spinning and backing his car into the Turn 11 SAFER barrier. His team was unconcerned about the damage.
The No. 66 Ford Chip Ganassi Racing GT held onto the fast time in GT Le Mans with Joey Hand at the controls (1m43.115s). Hand edged teammate Richard Westbrook (+0.111s) in the No. 67 Ford GT and Antonio Garcia in the No. 3 Corvette C7.R (+0.168s).
Like the FGCR Ford, Katherine Legge kept the No. 93 Michael Shank Racing Acura NSX GT3 (ABOVE) at the top of GT Daytona (1m45.528s) while Jack Hawksworth took over second place with in the No. 15 Lexus RCF GT3 (+0.168s) and Andrew Davis ran a close third in the No. 57 Stevenson Motorsports Audi R8 LMS GT3 (+0.178s).
