A familiar car returned to the top of IMSA’s timing and scoring system on Friday during opening practice for the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship’s visit to Canadian Tire Motorsports Park as Wayne Taylor Racing’s No. 10 Cadillac DPi-V.R led the field.
Jordan Taylor (1m09.443s) was nearly matched by Ryan Dalziel in the No. 2 Tequila Patron ESM Nissan Onroak DPi (+0.007s) and Jonathan Bomarito in the No. 55 Mazda RT24-P (+0.298s). DPis held the top five positions while the fastest WEC LMP2 took sixth, thanks to Stephen Simpson in the No. 85 JDC-Miller Motorsports ORECA 07-Gibson (+0.575s).
Pato O’Ward was comfortably fastest in PC with the No. 38 Performance Tech Motorsports entry (1m12.512s) as the No. 20 BAR1 Motorsports PC (+1.793s) and the sister No. 26 BAR1 car was more than three seconds adrift.
The Porsche GT Team made a statement in GT Le Mans as the pair of 911 RSRs, led by Laurens Vanthoor in the No. 912 (1m15.151s) and Patrick Pilet in the No. 911 (+0.435), kept the Watkins Glen-winning No. 25 BMW Team RLL M6 driven by Alexander Sims at bay (+0.567s) in third.
Andy Lally, riding a two-race win streak in the No. 93 Acura NSX GT3, maintained Michael Shank Racing’s Watkins Glen pace by topping GT Daytona (1m17.412s). Jens Klingmann in the No. 96 Turner Motorsport BMW M6 GT3 (+0.224s) and Tristan Vautier in the No. 75 SunEnergy1 Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3 (0.236s) completed the GTD top three.
FP1 at CTMP was a messy affair as multiple spins and a red flag for the stalled No. 20 BAR1 Motorsports PC initially slowed the session. A second red flag was raised when Gunnar Jeannette suffered a crash in the No. 50 Mercedes-AMG GT3, which appeared to lose its left-rear wheel after leaving the pits. The Riley Motorsports driver’s impact at Turn 8, which included contact with the No. 26 BAR1 PC while trying to control his three-wheeler, brought a halt to the one-hour session as the damaged car was towed back to the paddock.
UP NEXT: FP2, 3:55 p.m. ET
