Ford leads opening Lime Rock practice

The opening practice session for Saturday’s Northeast Grand Prix IMSA event at Lime Rock had a hint of promise from Porsche as Laurens Vanthoor held early command during the 60-minute outing, but Ford made sure its presence was felt as the Blue Oval shot to the top with a 1-2 on the final time sheet.

The pair of Ford Chip Ganassi Racing GTs, led by Dirk Muller in the No. 66 (51.077s) and Ryan Briscoe in the No. 67 (+0.191s), bumped Vanthoor’s No. 912 Porsche GT Team 911 RSR down to third (+0.253s) in the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship’s GT Le Mans class.

Corvette Racing’s Antonio Garcia almost matched the Porsche in his No. 4 C7.R (+0.291s), and the best from BMW Team RLL, which is coming off two consecutive wins, could only manage a distant sixth with Alexander Sims (+0.607s) in the No. 25 M6.

Porsche fared better in GT Daytona with its Pro-Am customer Park Place Motorsports as Jorg Bergmeister set the pace in the No. 73 Porsche 911 GT3 R (52.818s). Michael Shank Racing’s No. 93 Acura NSX GT3 driven by Andy Lally (+0.028) and Daniel Morad in the No. 28 Alegra Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3 (+0.048s) were within one hundredth of Bergmeister in a session that had a few offs, but no major incidents or stoppages.
