Ricky Taylor destroyed IMSA’s Prototype qualifying standard with the No. 10 Wayne Taylor Racing Cadillac DPi-V.R on Saturday at Road America. Wound up to full attack mode, the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship points-leading entry (1m53.508s) took an incredible 0.999s out of the lap record set by Mazda’s Jonathan Bomarito in 2016.
“What an amazing day. The car was beautiful,” Taylor told IMSA Radio. “The team gave me a great qualifying car. We’ll enjoy this for now; it’s good to have another good starting position.”
Behind Taylor, four Ligiers followed as the first of the WEC LMP2s in the hands of PR1/Mathiasen’s Jose Gutierrez (+1.017s) took second in the No. 52 JS P217. Scott Sharp (+1.030s) took third in his No. 2 Tequila Patron ESM Nissan Onroak DPi, Marc Goossens was a solid fourth on Visit Florida Racing’s debut with its JS P217 (+1.128s) and the second Ligier-based Nissan of Johannes van Overbeek was fifth (+1.131s).

Like Taylor in Prototype, Dirk Muller clobbered the GT Le Mans field with his No. 66 Ford Chip Ganassi Racing GT as he scored his second consecutive pole at Road America. The factory ace toyed with the other factory entries as his tiny coupe (2m01.422s) was well clear of the sister No. 67 Ford GT driven by Ryan Briscoe (+0.781s) and BMW Team RLL’s Alexander Sims, who almost matched the second Ford (+0.789s) with his No. 25 BMW M6 GTLM.
“The boys worked so hard and we have something open from last year,” Muller said. “We had pole and had to fix something on pit lane, so there’s unfinished business. Now it’s all about tomorrow.”
Beyond Muller’s incredible pace, the other surprise from the session went to Corvette Racing as its pair of yellow C7.Rs were slowest in the class by two seconds.
Change Racing showed threatening pace with the No. 16 Lamborghini Huracan GT3 through the three practice sessions leading into qualifying, and once time trials were over for the Pro-Am GT Daytona class, Jeroen Mul had pole position with a lap that was almost a full second below the previous record.
Mul (2m6.649s) eclipsed Turner Motorsport’s Jesse Krohn in the No. 96 BMW M6 GT3 (+0.174s) and Patrick Lindsey in the No. 73 Park Place Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3 R (+0.500s).
“It’s been a long time coming this year,” said Mul, who turned his first laps at the track on Friday. “It’s not a race [win] yet, but it’s a good start. It’s one of the 11 new tracks for me, and it’s going to be cool racing here.”
The No. 93 Michael Shank Racing Acura NSX GT3 did not participate in qualifying after a sizable crash this morning, and the No. 80 Lone Star Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3 also missed the session.
In front of friends and family, James French captured his 10th career PC pole and fifth in a row on Saturday with the No. 38 Performance Tech Motorsports entry (1m59.149s).
“It’s great to have it happen at the home event,” the Wisconsinite said after running 2.9 seconds faster than his closest rival. “It’s a beautiful day out here and we had a fantastic car.”
