Skipping a few rounds of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship hasn’t slowed Risi Competizione and its Ferrari 488 driven by Toni Vilander and Giancarlo Fisichella. The Finnish/Italian duo were fast from the moment practice began at Virginia International Raceway on Friday, and with their session-leading pace Saturday morning just prior to qualifying, the rest of the GT Le Mans class could have a fight on their hands.
Vilander’s lap of 1m40.855s edged Ford Chip Ganassi Racing’s Dirk Muller in the No. 67 GT (+0.174s) and John Edwards in the No. 24 BMW Team RLL M6 GTLM (+0.199s). Other than a brief grass mowing adventure by Corvette Racing’s Tommy Milner, the one-hour session was free of drama.
After leading three straight sessions, Change Racing’s Jeroen Mul has taken complete control of GT Daytona with the No. 16 Lamborghini Huracan GT3. His lap of 1m43.223 was in a different league compared to the second-place No. 57 Stevenson Motorsports Audi R8 LMS driven by Lawson Aschenbach (+0.421s) and Jesse Krohn’s No. 96 Turner Motorsport BMW M6 GT3 (+0.474s).
Fans won’t have to wait long to find out whether Risi and Change can hold onto their positions atop the field for Sunday’s Michelin GT Challenge at VIR.
