Porsche 919 Hybrid factory drivers Earl Bamber and Nick Tandy are returning to the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship for the Petit Le Mans season finale at Road Atlanta on Oct. 7, joining the Porsche GT Team for their first drive in the 911 RSR.
Bamber will share the No. 912 Porsche 911 RSR with Gimmi Bruni and Laurens Vanthoor, while Tandy will join Patrick Pilet and Dirk Werner in the No. 911 RSR. Tandy and Pilet were part of the driver lineup that took the overall and GTLM class victory in the rain-shortened 2015 Petit Le Mans. Tandy and Bamber (pictured left to right, above) also won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in a Porsche 919 Hybrid in 2015.
“Clinching the first overall victory for Porsche at Petit Le Mans in 2015 and the first-ever win for a GT car at this classic will always be one of the milestones of my career,” Tandy said. “By returning with the new 911 RSR, I’ve now fulfilled one of my greatest wishes.”
Added Bamber: “I can hardly wait to drive the 911 RSR again, especially at a great race like the Petit Le Mans. I’m also looking forward to working with the team. In the past, we’ve enjoyed a great and successful time together.
With Porsche’s upcoming exit from LMP1, Bamber, Tandy, and other elite 919 Hybrid pilots will be looking for reassignment to other championships or, in some cases, new jobs altogether. 2016 WEC P1 championship winner Neel Jani became the first of the 919 drivers to confirm his plans outside the brand for 2018 on Thursday when he announced a move to Formula E with FF Dragon Racing.
It’s unclear whether the Petit Le Mans outing for Bamber and Tandy will be followed by a full-time IMSA return next season. Bamber and Tandy were regulars in the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship for Porsche from 2014-’16, winning at almost every circuit visited by IMSA prior to receiving full-time opportunities to represent the German marque in its premier FIA World Endurance Championship program.
“We’re delighted to welcome two good old acquaintances to the Porsche GT Team for this classic,” said Dr. Frank-Steffen Walliser, Porsche vice president motorsport and GT cars. “They won Le Mans outright and are very excited to be racing the new 911 RSR for the first time, particularly after playing a key role in its development. We couldn’t wish for better support in the fight for the prestigious North American Endurance Cup, which will be decided at Petit Le Mans.”
