Last Sunday brought another racing head-to-head TV battle, as Formula 1’s United States Grand Prix on ABC ran opposite NASCAR’s playoffs Round of 8 decider at Kansas on NBC’s broadcast network.
NASCAR was an easy winner of the apples-to-apples contest. The Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race averaged a 1.74 rating and 2.7 million viewers. Interestingly, though, that was little changed from last year’s 1.69/2.8m when the race aired on NBCSN.
The F1 race from Circuit of The Americas, which started about an hour earlier, averaged an 0.51/791,000, down from an 0.65/1.0m when the race aired on NBC last year.
The NASCAR Xfinity Series race from Kansas also got the broadcast network treatment Saturday on NBCSN, and averaged an 0.86/1.3m. That’s up from a 0.76/1.1m last year, also on NBC.
