Evernham, Kauffman acquire rights to IROC brand

By

Former NASCAR team owners Ray Evernham and Rob Kauffman have acquired the rights to the IROC brand.

The new venture, IROC Holdings LLC, will be based in Mooresville, North Carolina, and “plans to bring the historic brand back to life.” There is the intent to run a vintage type race before the end of the year.

From 1973 to 2006 IROC, otherwise known as the International Race of Champions, was a series of races with identical race cars prepared by a single team of mechanics in order to make it a competition of driver skill.

Porsche 911 Carrera RSRs were used for the inaugural season in 1974, with purpose-built stock cars being used for the remainder of the series’ existence – Chevrolet Camaros from 1975-89, Dodge Daytonas from 1990-93 and Dodge Avengers for a two year period afterwards, with Pontiac Trans Ams being the series’ car of choice from 1996 until its final season a decade later.

It featured drivers from different forms of racing such as NASCAR and IndyCar. Champions of IROC include Tony Stewart, Dale Earnhardt Sr., Al Unser Jr., and Mario Andretti.

Evernham, a NASCAR Hall of Famer, was a mechanic in the IROC Series. Last year, Hagerty released a YouTube video with Evernham in which he shows off the vintage IROC cars he collects.
