Antonio Felix da Costa (BMW i Andretti Motorsport) paced the way ahead of qualifying in Mexico City, setting a new lap record in practice with a time of 58.963s around the 1.3-mile Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez circuit. Close behind the Portuguese driver were Venturi’s Felipe Massa and Sebastien Buemi (Nissan e.dams), Both Venturi cars finished second in their respective morning practice sessions.
Just 10 minutes into the session, NIO Formula E Team’s Oliver Turvey clipped the chicane on Turn 15, snapping his front axle and sending him back to the garage. Turvey started last year’s race from the pole before finishing second overall.
Despite warmer track temperatures, a number of drivers were still struggling to find braking points, with several smoking lock-ups, notably at the end of the start/finish straight going into Turn 1. With 18 cars lapping within a second of each other in practice, setting up an intense qualifying session and race in Mexico City.
